Taboola Advertising Management: Native, Video and Display Ads on Realize

Most people know Taboola from the 'you may also like' boxes under articles on news sites. In 2025 the company rebuilt its advertiser platform as Realize, so native recommendations now sit alongside display, performance video and vertical formats in one account. We use Taboola Realize to find measurable performance on the open web, beyond search and social.

Purpose and appearance

What do we use this platform for?

For us, Taboola's role is to add new, measurable volume from the open web when Google and Meta campaigns start to saturate. It reaches people reading news and content with articles, products or offers and brings qualified visits and conversions to the site. We usually open the channel once search and social are established, and make it efficient by cleaning it up publisher by publisher.

Taboola vs. Realize: what changed in 2025?

Taboola's advertiser platform was renamed Realize in 2025, and the taboola.com/realize address moved to realize.com. The change is more than a name: the platform goes beyond classic native recommendation widgets and brings display, performance video, carousel, vertical and app promotion formats together in one account. According to Realize, the network covers more than 11,000 publishers and about 600 million daily active users. Existing Taboola accounts are also managed on this platform. We organize our service under two headings: Realize Native Ads, which run in recommendation boxes between articles, and Realize Video and Display campaigns, which use standard ad slots.

Taboola Performance AI and Realize+: what automation changes

Performance AI, Realize's automated bidding layer, distributes bids and budget predictively with a Maximize Conversions strategy; with Custom Rules, you can write rules that pause a campaign once a set cost threshold is exceeded. Realize+, announced on 23 April 2026, adds an agent-based AI layer on top: a decision engine, a budget allocator and a creative asset generator make their own decisions based on the goal.

As automation increases, our focus shifts to measurement and inputs. Defining conversion events correctly, deciding which publishers to exclude and keeping creatives in line with the brand voice are still human decisions. Realize+ is currently opening through beta access; we check its availability in your account during setup, and even when it's on, we monitor its decisions against manual campaigns for the first few weeks.

Taboola Pixel setup and conversion tracking

Bid optimization in Realize relies on Taboola Pixel. The pixel can be installed with the WordPress plugin, the Shopify app, manual code or Google Tag Manager; we usually prefer GTM. After installing the base pixel, we separately define conversion rules such as purchase, lead or sign-up. If the event name isn't sent from the site exactly as written in the dashboard, Realize doesn't record the conversion; this is a common error we see in accounts we take over. We validate sales by comparing them with GA4.

Taboola: when do we recommend it?

We recommend it

  • Brands whose volume on Google and Meta has saturated and that are looking for new scalable traffic
  • Brands that want to test native, video and display in one account with the same pixel data
  • Brands with blog, guide or advertorial content ready to use
  • Teams with measurement in place to read publisher-level reports and apply exclusions

We don't recommend it

  • Campaigns where conversion tracking can't be set up or that only target clicks
  • Brands that, for brand safety reasons, won't accept appearing next to news sites
  • Sites with slow or non-mobile-friendly landing pages

How we manage Taboola

  1. Pixel and eventsWe install Taboola Pixel with GTM and match conversion rules and event names exactly with the dashboard.
  2. Format selectionDepending on the goal, we start with native, performance video or display.
  3. Content and landing pageIf a pre-landing page or guide content suited to native traffic is needed, we prepare it together.
  4. Publisher cleanupIn the first weeks, we read the publisher report and exclude underperforming sites.
  5. Automation rulesWe keep campaigns that exceed cost thresholds under control with Performance AI and Custom Rules.

Frequently asked questions

Taboola: frequently asked questions

Is Taboola the same as Realize?

Realize is the new name of Taboola's advertiser platform since 2025, and taboola.com/realize moved to realize.com. It goes beyond native recommendation widgets with display, performance video, carousel, vertical and app promotion formats in the same account.

We already have a Taboola account. Do we need to move to Realize?

No separate migration is needed; existing advertiser accounts are managed on Realize. What changes is the wider range of formats and automation. When we take over an existing account, we review older campaigns' pixel and conversion settings against the new structure.

Can we see which sites our Taboola ads appear on?

Yes. Realize reports by publisher, showing where an ad was shown, clicked and converted. We read this report often at launch and weekly once the campaign is stable, excluding sites that don't suit the brand or don't convert.

Why does Taboola traffic convert less than Google traffic?

Someone searching has already stated a need; someone reading the news is busy with something else. Taboola traffic often needs an intermediate step such as guide content, a comparison page or a pre-landing page, and we set the conversion goal with that step in mind.

Is native advertising on Taboola a fit for every brand?

No. It doesn't suit campaigns that can't track conversions, brands that won't appear next to news content for brand safety reasons, or sites with slow or non-mobile-friendly landing pages.
