Meta image templates: a layer panel and product cards with price tags using the same template

Meta image templates are a new, free way to add brand design to the product images in your catalog ads. You can now place prices, logos or campaign messages on top of product images directly inside Meta's own tools. And you do it for thousands of products in your catalog with a single design.

Until now, this required paid tools such as Feedance, CRWizard, Channable, DataFeedWatch, Productsup, GoDataFeed, Confect, Hunch, Smartly, Cropink, Feedr, Socioh, Creatopy and Abyssale. Those tools took your product feed, redesigned the images and sent them back to Meta as a new feed. You no longer need to pay these tools for dynamic image templates on Meta: the feature is now free inside Meta. In this guide we explain what Meta image templates are, where you create them and what they bring to your brand. We also cover the situations where you may still need a paid tool.

What are Meta image templates?

An image template is a saved, reusable design that Meta applies on top of your product image at the moment the ad is shown. You design layers such as backgrounds, badges, price tags and text once. Meta then applies the design to every product in your catalog automatically, so you never have to edit product images one by one.

Templates also use your catalog data. For example, when a product name, brand or price changes, the image in the ad updates on its own. So when you change prices for a sale, you don't need to redesign anything.

Where do you create Meta image templates?

You create templates in Commerce Manager, and each template belongs to a single catalog. Here are the steps:

  1. Open your catalog in Commerce Manager and go to Image templates in the left menu.
  2. Create a new template and choose the aspect ratio: 1:1, 4:5 or 9:16.
  3. Add layers: the product image, text, images such as your logo, and stickers.
  4. Check the template with different product sets and products in the preview area.
  5. Save the template.
  6. In Ads Manager, open a catalog or Advantage+ sales campaign that uses the same catalog. Then select the template at ad level, in the ad creative section.

In Ads Manager you can only select a template; to create or edit it, you go back to Commerce Manager. The feature is not yet enabled on every account either. Meta notes in its developer documentation that availability is currently limited.

Which layers can you use?

LayerWhat it does
ProductPlaces the product image from your catalog; you can pick the main image or one of the additional images.
Catalog fieldPulls information such as product name, brand, price and sale price from the catalog.
TextAdds a campaign message, a slogan or other fixed information.
ImageAdds your own files, such as a logo or brand visual.
StickerAdds ready-made shapes such as badges and labels.
BackgroundForms the base of the template.

For text layers you can set the font, size, color, opacity, alignment, bold or italic style and angle. You can also set each layer's size and position down to the pixel. In addition, there is a conditional display option at layer level, which lets you show a layer only when conditions you define are met.

Benefits of Meta image templates

  • No extra cost: Templates are built into Meta and free. There is no monthly subscription or per-product fee.
  • One design, the whole catalog: A design you prepare once is applied to thousands of products at the same time.
  • No extra feed: You use your existing catalog, so you don't have to build and sync a separate feed.
  • Up-to-date prices: Price and discount information comes from the catalog, so it always stays current on the image.
  • Brand consistency: Your logo, colors and font look the same across all product ads.
  • More eye-catching ads: Product images on white backgrounds look alike in the feed. A price tag and a campaign message make the ad clear at a glance.

Do you still need paid tools?

For most brands that advertise only on Meta and want to add prices, logos and campaign messages to catalog images, the answer is no. However, these third-party tools can still be useful in some cases:

  • if you want to use the same design on other channels such as Google or TikTok,
  • if you need to remove or replace product backgrounds,
  • if you want to generate product videos automatically from your catalog,
  • if you have complex design scenarios driven by many rules.

So decide based on your needs. Start with Meta image templates, and consider an extra tool only if a real gap appears.

What to watch out for with Meta image templates

  • Published templates are locked: Once a template is linked to an ad, you can't edit it directly. To make changes, create a copy and link the new version to your ads.
  • Automatic image enhancements: Advantage+ creative enhancements can alter the image and break your design. When you use templates, check the image-related enhancements and turn them off.
  • Safe zone: In 9:16 designs, the Reels and Stories interface covers the top and bottom of the screen. Keep the price and message in the middle.
  • Readability: Text looks small on a phone. Use few words, large type and strong contrast.
  • Product image quality: A template frames the product image but doesn't fix it. Make sure the images in your catalog are sharp and consistent.

Finally, don't decide without measuring the impact. Compare a templated ad with a plain one in the same audience, and make the call with A/B testing.

Conclusion

Meta image templates have made designing catalog ads free and simple for everyone. A well-built template helps your catalog ads stand out in the feed and removes the cost of extra tools.
