Meta Advantage+ Catalog Ads (Dynamic Product Ads)

Advantage+ catalog ads, still widely called dynamic product ads (DPA), automatically show each person the products most likely to interest them from your catalog in Commerce Manager. There's no need to build ads one by one for hundreds of products. The trade-off is clear: ad quality now depends on the quality of the product feed. That's why, in a catalog campaign, half our time is spent inside the feed before we ever open Ads Manager.

Purpose and appearance

What do we use this format for?

We use catalog ads to bring back visitors who viewed a product and left without buying, showing them the product they looked at, and to automatically show each person in a store with hundreds of products the item most likely to interest them. Our aim is to turn abandoned cart items into sales and keep ads up to date through the feed as prices and stock change.

Funnel stages it serves

  1. Awareness
  2. Consideration
  3. Conversion
  4. Loyalty

Product feed and Pixel matching: the basis of dynamic ads

To show users the product they viewed on the site, Meta matches the content_ids value from the Pixel or Conversions API with the product ID in the catalog. If these two values differ, for example if the site sends a variant code while the catalog uses the parent product code, the campaign runs but shows the wrong product. The catalog match rate in Events Manager is the first number we check before opening a catalog campaign.

  • The price field must not arrive in Turkish formatting (1.299,90 TL); Meta expects the format 1299.90 TRY.
  • Discounts must be supplied in the sale_price field; otherwise the ad shows the old price and users find a different price on the site.
  • The availability field for out-of-stock products must be current; the feed should refresh at least once a day.
  • Product photos on a white background are weak on their own; we use the additional image fields in the catalog for lifestyle images.
  • Variants must be grouped with item_group_id; otherwise six sizes of the same shirt appear side by side in the carousel.

Feed issues on Turkish ecommerce platforms and marketplaces

Most hosted ecommerce platforms in Türkiye generate an XML product feed, but that feed is usually built for Merchant Center for Google Shopping campaigns. Category mapping, the brand field and image links can break when moved to Meta. Rather than connecting the feed directly, we clean it up through an intermediate rules layer where needed and rewrite titles in the pattern 'Brand + product type + distinguishing attribute'.

For brands that sell only through marketplaces, setting up catalog ads is possible but rarely efficient in practice. Because you can't place a Meta Pixel on a marketplace product page, Meta can't see who viewed what, and no retargeting audience is built. For these brands, instead of catalog ads, we recommend sending traffic to the marketplace page with video and images that explain the product, and reading results in the marketplace's own dashboard.

Dynamic retargeting vs. prospecting with catalog ads

In retargeting the rule is simple: show people who viewed a product, or added it to cart without buying, in the last 7, 14 or 30 days that product and similar ones. In a broad audience setup, Meta finds people who have never visited the site but have shown interest in similar products. We don't mix the two in the same ad set, and we split product sets accordingly: the full inventory for retargeting, best sellers and high-margin products for broad audiences.

Catalog ads can also run alongside static ads within Advantage+ Sales campaigns. Which structure works better depends on the number of products and order volume; we decide by measuring it in an equal-budget test. When the product range is small and the creative is strong, static ads usually come out ahead; when the range is wide, catalog weight usually does.

Catalog ad creative: frames, video, Collection and Partnership ads

By default, a catalog ad is a plain product carousel. With Advantage+ catalog creative options we can add a frame, price or discount label around the product image, and with catalog video we can bring products to Reels as vertical video. In the Collection format, a brand video sits at the top with four catalog products below, and people who click go to an Instant Experience page.

Since 2025, Partnership ads and catalog can be combined in the same ad: in the feed, the creator's short intro card appears first, and swiping reveals the catalog products. The creator's recommendation builds trust, and the catalog ties that trust to a product that can be bought right away. We regularly check the effect of frames and product order on clicks at product set level.

Advantage+ Catalog Ads: when do we recommend it?

We recommend it

  • Ecommerce sites with dozens or thousands of products
  • Stores with a high share of visitors who add to cart and leave without buying
  • Businesses with listable inventory such as hotels, real estate, automotive or courses
  • Brands whose prices and stock change frequently

We don't recommend it

  • Brands selling a single product or a few bundles; static and video ads tell the story better here
  • Brands whose product pages exist only on marketplaces; without a Pixel, no product view data is collected
  • Sites that can't keep the feed updated regularly and often show incorrect prices

Frequently asked questions

Advantage+ Catalog Ads: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Advantage+ catalog ads and dynamic product ads?

They are the same format. Meta renamed dynamic ads to Advantage+ catalog ads; the mechanism of matching Pixel or Conversions API events to catalog products stayed the same, and many advertisers still call them DPA.

Why are our catalog ads showing the wrong products?

Usually because the content_ids value sent by the Pixel or Conversions API doesn't match the product ID in the catalog, for example when the site sends a variant code and the catalog uses the parent product code. We check the catalog match rate in Events Manager before launching.

Are catalog ads only for ecommerce?

No. Meta also allows catalog ads with the Leads objective. Real estate listings, car inventory, hotel rooms or education programs can be uploaded as a catalog, and users fill in the form for the listing they're interested in. The feed fields vary by industry, and we configure them accordingly.

Our product images are on a white background. Are they good enough for ads?

For retargeting they are usually enough, because people already know the product. In new customer campaigns, white-background images get lost in the feed easily. We add lifestyle photos to the feed as additional images, or use frames and labels through catalog creative options.

How often does the product feed need to be updated?

At least once a day, as long as prices and stock change. During sale periods such as the November sales or New Year, we set up hourly updates. Otherwise the ad shows an old price, and people leave as soon as they see a different price on the site.
