Click-to-WhatsApp and Instagram Messaging Ads Management

In Türkiye, many sales still start with a message like "Hi, can I get a price?". Click-to-message ads take people who tap an ad on Facebook or Instagram straight into a WhatsApp, Instagram Direct or Messenger chat. The ad's job does not end there: who answers the chat, how fast and with what reply shapes the result as much as the ad itself. So we plan the ad setup and the chat handling together.

Purpose and appearance

What do we use this format for?

We use messaging ads for brands whose sales close in a WhatsApp or Instagram Direct chat, to bring buyers who are ready to ask questions straight into a conversation. For products whose price depends on the person, or that need an appointment or measurements, a chat is the shortest path to a decision, faster than a form or a website.

Funnel stages it serves

  1. Awareness
  2. Consideration
  3. Conversion
  4. Loyalty

Optimizing for conversations or purchases

Ads Manager has no separate "messaging" objective; messaging is a conversion location you can choose under several objectives. With the Engagement objective, Meta finds people likely to start a conversation. With Leads, it collects information inside the chat through a question-and-answer flow. With Sales, it looks for people likely to buy after the chat; that requires sales from the chat to be reported back to Meta through the Conversions API.

A campaign optimized only for conversation count fills up over time with people who type "can I get info?" and disappear. In accounts where we can send sales data back, we move optimization step by step to the purchase event. If sales data is not available yet, we at least tag people who answer product and budget questions in the chat, and look at which creative brings qualified conversations.

WhatsApp, Instagram Direct or Messenger: which channel fits

All three can be opened from the same ad, but user behavior differs. On WhatsApp people write with their phone number, on Instagram Direct with their profile, on Messenger with their Facebook account, and each comes with a different expected reply speed. We choose the channel by how the product is sold and by which app your team answers fastest in.

  • WhatsApp: for products with questions about price, size, appointments or delivery. The user has already shared their number, which makes follow-up easier. In Türkiye it is the channel we use most for furniture, jewelry, clinics, courses and tours.
  • Instagram Direct: for younger, visually driven audiences who follow the brand on Instagram. The chat stays tied to the profile, so the user can browse product posts at the same time.
  • Messenger: for brands whose audience uses Facebook heavily, skews older and gets customer service through a Facebook Page.
  • When we cannot tell which channel fits, we leave several messaging apps on in the same ad set, let Meta distribute delivery and compare sales rate by channel in reports.

The first minute of the chat is part of the ad

In the ad settings you can define suggested questions the user can tap to start the chat, plus a greeting message. We pick suggested questions from the ones the brand really gets most: "What is the price?", "Do you deliver to Istanbul?", "Which days are free for an appointment?". That way the chat starts with an answerable question instead of a blank "Hi".

Chats that come in outside working hours are the biggest source of loss. Either the ad runs only during hours when the team can reply, or a chatbot on the WhatsApp Business Platform handles the first questions. The bot we build is not meant to close the sale; it learns the product, the city and the budget, then hands the chat to the right sales rep.

How we track sales from WhatsApp chats

There is no automatic Purchase event as on a website; the sale closes inside the chat, often by bank transfer or cash on delivery. Labels marking "order placed" in the WhatsApp Business app are enough to start. In a more structured setup, we send the sale event to Meta via the Conversions API through the WhatsApp Business Platform and a CRM or messaging tool. We follow the drop-off at each step from chat to sale with funnel analysis and revenue in a Data Studio report.

Messaging (WhatsApp) Ads: when do we recommend it?

We recommend it

  • Boutique fashion, jewelry and home decor brands that take orders on WhatsApp after customers send a photo and ask for a price
  • Products and services whose price changes by person, size or date
  • Clinics, beauty salons, courses and services that work by appointment
  • Businesses without a website, or whose site is not ready for conversions

We don't recommend it

  • Teams with nobody to answer messages quickly during the day
  • E-commerce brands with low basket values and a fast checkout on the site; an Advantage+ sales campaign is more efficient there
  • Work where a form collects enough information and no chat is needed; lead ads fit better there

How we manage Messaging (WhatsApp) Ads

  1. Account connectionsWe link the WhatsApp Business number to the Facebook Page and check Instagram Direct and Messenger permissions.
  2. Chat scriptWe write the suggested questions, greeting, out-of-hours reply and the rule for handing chats to the sales team.
  3. Channel and objectiveWe set the channel and choose conversation or purchase optimization based on how the product sells.
  4. Sales labelingWe mark orders from chats with labels or a CRM and, where possible, send them to Meta via the Conversions API.
  5. Chat quality reviewEach week we review reply time and chat-to-sale rate alongside cost per conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Messaging (WhatsApp) Ads: frequently asked questions

What are click-to-WhatsApp ads?

They are Facebook and Instagram ads whose button opens a WhatsApp chat with your business instead of a website. In Ads Manager, WhatsApp is chosen as the messaging conversion location under the Engagement, Leads or Sales objective.

Is the WhatsApp Business app enough, or do we need the Platform (API)?

The app is enough to start: you link the number to the Page and run ads. If you get dozens of chats a day, several people reply, or you want sales from chats sent to Meta automatically, we recommend moving to the WhatsApp Business Platform with a messaging tool.

Cost per conversation is low but there are no sales. Why?

Usually for one of two reasons: the campaign is optimized only to start conversations, or chats get late replies. We first fix reply time and suggested questions, then send sales data to Meta to shift optimization toward people more likely to buy.

How are click-to-WhatsApp ads billed?

Ads that send people to WhatsApp are billed on impressions; clicks or started chats do not set the bill. So cost per conversation depends directly on how much interest the ad draws and how clear the chat button is. We put the "Message us on WhatsApp" call to action in the visual as well.

Can messaging ads open Instagram Direct instead of WhatsApp?

Yes. The same ad can open WhatsApp, Instagram Direct or Messenger. We pick the channel by audience and by which app your team answers fastest, or leave several on and compare sales rate by channel.
