Meta campaign objective

Meta Brand Awareness and Reach Campaigns on Facebook and Instagram

The awareness objective tells Meta to find people who will see and remember the ad, not people who will click it. We use it for launches, openings in a new city, the warm-up before a sales period or entry into a category where the brand is unknown. Judging these campaigns by clicks is misleading; what matters is how many people were reached, how often and how attentively.

Purpose and appearance

What do we use this format for?

We use awareness campaigns to fix a new product, city or brand in the target audience's memory and to build demand before the sales period. The video viewer audience built during the campaign moves into later sales campaigns, and impact is measured through branded searches, direct traffic and Instagram profile visits.

Funnel stages it serves

  1. Awareness
  2. Consideration
  3. Conversion
  4. Loyalty

Reach, ad recall lift or ThruPlay: choosing the performance goal

The awareness objective contains performance goals that work very differently from one another. The one we choose determines what the campaign buys: unique people, attention or watch time. With the same budget, the reach goal reaches more people, while the ad recall goal reaches fewer but more attentive people.

  • Reach: Reaches as many unique people as the budget allows. The frequency cap (e.g. twice in 7 days) can be set here; it is the clearest option for an announcement to everyone in a given city.
  • Ad recall lift: Meta estimates the people most likely to remember the ad if asked within two days. Reach is lower and attention higher; it is our first choice for brand campaigns.
  • ThruPlay: Optimizes for people who watch 15 seconds of the video (or all of it, if shorter). We use it for storytelling videos and when we want to build a retargeting audience later.
  • Impressions: Grows the number of impressions regardless of unique people. We rarely choose it because it can push frequency up without control.

How to measure brand awareness campaign results

An awareness ad does not bring conversions directly, but it should change something. During and after the campaign, we compare branded searches, direct site traffic, Instagram profile visits and follower growth with the period before the campaign. Running the campaign in certain cities and keeping it off in others is the most practical way to isolate the effect.

If budget and account eligibility allow, Meta's Brand Lift study can survey groups who did and did not see the ad. Since eligibility varies by account, we check this when planning the campaign. We identify when the season starts with seasonal behavior analysis and place the awareness budget a few weeks before the sales period.

Why the cheapest CPM is not the best impression

In awareness campaigns, it is tempting to think success rises as CPM falls. In reality, the cheapest impressions usually come from the placements that get the least attention. An in-app banner on Audience Network, a post scrolled past quickly in the feed and a video visible for half a second in Reels all count as the same 'impression'. Frequency slips by in a similar way: we often see campaigns where weekly frequency exceeds 8-10 and the same person sees the same ad to the point of fatigue.

That is why we read the placement report and frequency distribution weekly and refresh creative every two to three weeks. If the Audience Network share rises unexpectedly, we remove that placement and compare results; if recall and watch time improve, we keep the new distribution even if CPM goes up. For us, a good impression is one that is actually seen; its cheapness comes second.

Awareness creative: show the brand in the first three seconds

In the feed, most users do not see the end of a video. We show the logo or product in the first seconds and add captions and text overlays for people watching with the sound off. We prepare a 9:16 version for Reels and Stories and a 4:5 version for the feed. We compare two different openings with an A/B test in Meta's experiments tool, then also use the version that leads on recall and watch time in traffic and engagement or sales campaigns.

Awareness and Reach Campaigns: when do we recommend it?

We recommend it

  • Announcements of a new product, a new store or an opening in a new city
  • Warm-up before a campaign period (November sales, public holidays, back to school)
  • Brands that are little known in their category and have low search demand
  • Brands that want to build a viewer audience for sales campaigns

We don't recommend it

  • Small accounts whose monthly budget only covers a sales campaign
  • Situations where no comparison (branded search, city-level sales) can be made to measure impact
  • Campaigns whose creative is just a single static image

How we manage Awareness and Reach Campaigns

  1. Measurement frameworkBefore the campaign, we record baseline levels for branded search, direct traffic and profile visits.
  2. Performance goal selectionWe choose reach for announcements, ad recall for brand messages and ThruPlay for storytelling.
  3. Weekly frequency targetWe set the weekly target frequency and the frequency cap based on campaign length.
  4. Geographic control groupWhere possible, we keep some cities off to make the impact comparable.
  5. Moving to the viewer audienceWe save video viewers as an audience and use it in later sales campaigns.

Frequently asked questions

Awareness and Reach Campaigns: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between reach and ad recall lift on Meta?

Reach shows the ad to as many unique people as the budget allows and lets you set a frequency cap. Ad recall lift targets the people Meta estimates are most likely to remember the ad if asked within two days, so reach is lower but attention is higher. We use reach for announcements and ad recall lift for brand messages.

Why are there so few clicks in an awareness campaign?

Under this objective, Meta does not look for users likely to click; it prioritizes people who will see and remember the ad. A low click-through rate is therefore an expected result. We assess impact through growth in branded searches, direct traffic and profile visits, compared where possible with cities where the campaign did not run.

Is Reach and Frequency buying available in Türkiye?

Meta's reservation buying option, where price and reach are set in advance instead of through auction, depends on account eligibility. For major launches, we check whether it is enabled in your account and, if so, compare it with auction buying for predictable reach.

How long should we run awareness ads?

A one-week awareness campaign usually leaves no trace in memory. We plan at least two to four weeks so that each person in the target audience is reached several times, end before the sales period and move the retargeting audience into sales campaigns.
