Pinterest Shopping Ads and Catalog Management

Pinterest Shopping ads turn every product in your catalog into a product pin, complete with price, image and stock status. We don't design ads one by one; we connect the catalog, split products into product groups and manage bids through those groups. Two things decide results: how clean the feed data is, and whether the site meets Pinterest's merchant guidelines.

Purpose and appearance

What do we use this format for?

We use Shopping ads to scale an ecommerce site's product sales through its catalog. We appear with price and stock information to users searching for products on Pinterest, and bring back visitors who browsed without buying or abandoned their cart with the products they viewed. While showing complementary products to existing customers, our goal is to raise ROAS at product group level.

Funnel stages it serves

  1. Awareness
  2. Consideration
  3. Conversion
  4. Loyalty

Pinterest catalog requirements and feed fields

To create a catalog, Pinterest requires a business account, a website with verified ownership and an installed Pinterest tag. The fourth condition is the one that usually causes problems on ecommerce sites in Türkiye: under the merchant guidelines, contact details and shipping and return policies must be easy to find. If this information isn't in the site's footer, or exists only inside the distance sales agreement, approval can be delayed.

  • Required fields: id, title, description, link, image_link, price, availability
  • For products with variants (size, color), item_group_id is also required
  • A single catalog can process up to 20 million products
  • Hosted sources are read daily; manually uploaded files are processed on each upload
  • If product video will be used, the video_link field is filled in the feed

Using your Google Merchant Center feed on Pinterest

Because the field names largely overlap, it usually can. Still, a feed built for Google doesn't always look good in the Pinterest feed. Google favors product photos on white backgrounds, while in the Pinterest feed images showing the product in use stand out; where possible, we add lifestyle photos to the additional image fields. We also simplify long, Google-specific keyword strings in titles.

We check three more things in the feed: that TL prices are sent with the correct currency code, that sale prices are supplied in a separate field, and that out-of-stock products switch to 'out of stock' without delay. When we also manage the same feed for Google Shopping campaigns and Meta catalog ads, we fix errors in one place.

Product groups and dynamic retargeting on Pinterest

According to Pinterest, sales campaigns don't require keyword or interest targeting; the system matches products with relevant users. The lever in our hands is product groups. We split groups by profit margin, season and best sellers, and give each group its own budget and bid. When 'All products' stays in a single group, spend tends to concentrate on cheap, frequently clicked products.

With dynamic retargeting, we can show users who visited the site or abandoned their cart the products they viewed. For this to work, the Pinterest tag must send the product ID in exactly the same format as the id in the catalog. When installing the tag with Google Tag Manager, we test this match and compare sales data with GA4.

Where Pinterest Shopping ads appear

We can't choose which surface Shopping ads appear on; Pinterest states this clearly. Product pins appear in the home feed, in search and in related pins, wherever Pinterest sees fit. That's why we read placement reports but do the optimization on product groups, bids and images. Once the catalog is running smoothly and weekly conversion volume has grown, we consider connecting the same catalog to a Performance+ campaign.

Shopping Ads: when do we recommend it?

We recommend it

  • Brands with their own ecommerce site and a regularly updated product feed
  • Visually driven categories such as fashion, home decor, beauty and jewelry
  • Accounts that want to show visitors who didn't buy the products they viewed
  • Brands running catalog ads on Google and Meta that want to bring the same feed to a new channel

We don't recommend it

  • Brands selling only on marketplaces with no site of their own; the catalog requires a verified site
  • Businesses that haven't clearly published shipping and return policies on their site
  • Brands with only a handful of products; standard ads are more flexible here

Frequently asked questions

Shopping Ads: frequently asked questions

How do we set up Pinterest Shopping ads?

You need a Pinterest business account, a verified website, an installed Pinterest tag and a site that meets the merchant guidelines. Then the catalog is connected with the required fields (id, title, description, link, image_link, price, availability), products are split into groups and a sales campaign is built on those groups.

We sell on a marketplace. Can we run Pinterest Shopping ads?

Without your own site, usually not, because Pinterest requires a verified website and an installed Pinterest tag for the catalog. We can consider sending traffic to your marketplace store with standard Pinterest ads, but measuring sales becomes very difficult.

Do we need to add keywords to Shopping ads?

No. Pinterest states that keyword or interest targeting isn't required in sales campaigns; the system matches products with people. What we manage are product groups, bids, feed titles and image quality.

When do price changes in the catalog show up in the ads?

If the feed is hosted at a URL, Pinterest reads it once a day. During sale periods with frequent price changes within the day, such as the November sales, we align the feed's update time with the campaign calendar to avoid price and stock mismatches.

How do you send size and color variants in the feed?

Each size or color goes in as a separate row with its own id, and variants of the same product are grouped under item_group_id, which Pinterest requires for products with variants. For color variants, each row carries that color's own image; otherwise someone who clicks the red product sees the black one.
